Above is one of the prime reasons why I’ll always prefer retro games instead of next gen stuff. I’d also like to add the following – With the new nextgen consoles in the making (Durando – Xbox 720, PS4) games will most likely be released digitally. What this means is that while you can play the latest franchises, you will never actually own a true original copy of it. Well, at least not a fysical copy. Gone will be the days of games being released on actual media…

Oooh yeah, This game rocks! And it is famous too, as you might know already. This is in fact the game that is also known as the “All your base are belong to us” game, with “Cats” being the bad guy. Engrish is such a funny fail, and it seems to occur more often in shoot ‘em ups, another prime example being “Blazing Star” (You fail it!).

Nonetheless that isn’t what this game is all about. If you like game series such as R-Type, Thunderforce and Gradius, you will love Zero Wing. Like many others, I’m particularly fond of these type of games, they are always a challenge. This game has it all, fantastic detailed graphics, interesting stages and enemies, a memorable intro, very catchy music and excellent gameplay:

I had a blast playing through this. I never actually played Zero Wing untill today, and am so glad I did. When I played through the first two stages I said to myself: “This game is fantastic”. I had a wonderful time beating it, it has a certain charm and feel. The dancing pink/red potatoes screen when I finished the game somewhat surprised me, there’s no real “ending”. Some parts can be a bit difficult, this is especially the case in the last part of Stage 7 and the very beginning of Stage 8. The latter can be extremely frustrating if you never played it – to get through you need to act very fast and be careful not to get hit by one of the fast homing missiles. It took me a lot of tries to get past this part.

Verdict: Pick this up when you can – I assure you it is worth your money and time well spent. You’ll be amazed at how good this game is if you look past the Engrish “Base” intro. It is very challenging and appealing plus loads of replay value. As a fan of horizontal scrolling shoot ‘em ups I can recommend this to everyone!

I decided to get rid of the sidebars/menu’s, I never really liked them anyways. They are just a clusterfuck of a trillion similar links, in my humble opinion. I tried multiple things and css markup for the bars, but they just didn’t seem to fit in well. Sure, they have some nice features, but I don’t mind not having these.

With the new CSS3 and browser support, I can now also add shadow to text, something I always wanted to do. It looks just awesome, makes everything better readable and it’s a really nice effect. In fact, I already did something similar on my original design all those years ago, by simply copying the text, giving it a black color and moving it behind the original text with a 1 pixel offset. That did work pretty good, however it is completely unessesary, not forgetting pages take longer to load.

RSS is now working properly too. It doesn’t have any markup however, I might change that. Other thingies will be added in the near future. If you encounter anything out of the ordinary, please leave a comment and let me know.
